Here at AMCI, we want to make sure you are well informed. It is important that you understand the AHIMA CEUs Recertification Process. As a health information management (HIM) professional, maintaining your AHIMA certification is crucial for career growth and staying current. The recertification process through Continuing Education Units (CEUs) ensures ongoing competence in your area of expertise. This blog post will guide you through the AHIMA CEUs recertification process.

Understanding AHIMA CEUs Recertification Process

AHIMA requires credential holders to recertify every two years to remain up-to-date with the latest developments in health information management. The recertification cycle begins on January 1st, following the year you earn your credential, and ends two years later on December 31st.

CEU Requirements

The number of CEUs required depends on the credential you hold:

  • RHIA: 30 CEUs
  • RHIT: 20 CEUs
  • CHDA, CHPS, CDIP: 30 CEUs
  • CCA, CCS, CCS-P: 20 CEUs

It’s important to note that at least 80% of your CEUs must be earned within the HIIM Domain.

HIIM Domains

The HIIM profession encompasses a wide range of services. The HIIM Domain is divided into eight areas:

  1. Data Structure, Content, and Information Governance
  2. Information Protection: Access, Disclosure, Archival, Privacy, and Security
  3. Informatics, Analytics, and Data Use
  4. Revenue Cycle Management
  5. Health Law and Compliance
  6. Organizational Management and Leadership
  7. Clinical Foundations
  8. Evolving Topics/Other HIIM Relevant Topics

The remaining 20% of CEUs can be earned from continuing education activities not directly related to HIIM domains but relevant to your professional position.
